I always have loved reading about other people’s fitness journeys throughout their life. Everyone’s experience is so different. The struggles and successes are learning lessons that can be applied to any and everyone. With that being said, I wanted to share one of my favorite progression journeys with you, courtesy of my amazing cousin, Chelsea!
“Plateau” the word that most of us who are trying to live a healthy lifestyle fear. But why fear a word that isn’t quite true? Did you know if you’re hitting a “plateau” your body is just trying to tell you it’s not the same body it used to be? You can’t keep trying to lose weight the same way you did 20, 30, 40+ pounds ago. You’re not the same person anymore, eating that same meal, lifting those same weights, doing that same cardio isn’t going to get you anywhere anymore. You have a whole new body, and need to approach life from a whole new way. I’m no expert, but let me tell you about myself. I’ve come a long way in my journey personally. I’ve lost around 70lbs in the last few years of my life. It was hard, and maintaining it has been harder. I first lost 30+ pounds, and quickly gained 20+ back. It took me over a year to figure out my life again and get back into the swing of a healthy lifestyle. Now that I’ve found my way back I’ve managed to keep those 70lbs off consistently, and maintained my weight for the last few 2 years (until starting Burn – I’ll introduce you to that shortly)
I used to spend 2 hours at the gym a day. I had my little routine established, every day of the week had it’s own set routine, varying rarely. It did me great for awhile, but lifting those same weights/reps, doing the same 40+ min of cardio not only stopped my body from losing weight, but stopped my mind from loving working out anymore. It became monotonous, and I just started going through the motions. What did I do to get out of this funk? I pushed myself to try something new. Through a few friends I heard positive things about Burn Boot Camp, I thought why not give it a shot? Maybe this change in routine is what I need.
I signed up for a 30 day trial (as the gym was new) and fell in love after 2 classes and signed up for a membership. I’ve now been a member for about 6 months, and within that time frame I’ve gotten in the best shape of my life! I’ve lost Body Fat, I’ve lost weight, I’ve gained SO much lean muscle, and have way more definition in my arms and hamstrings than ever before, but I’ve gained a much better mindset about life, I’ve regained motivation, but most importantly I’ve gained really good friends along the way.
Burn Boot Camp truly is an amazing environment. You’re essentially getting a trainer every day of the week working with you, even though it’s in a group setting, Max (head trainer at Sun Prairie) really makes it feel one on one and pushes you if he sees things are easy for you. He gets to know all of his members personally and their goals so he can really push you to accomplish them, he’s always pushing you to go faster, and lift heavier which has been a huge help. I know personally when I was working out on my own I didn’t push myself nearly as much as I could have, and Max knows this about me and is always pushing me to do better and be better. I’ve done numerous new moves in this gym that I would have never tried on my own working out in a Gym. And lets be honest.. ain’t nobody doing burpees on their own unless they are forced.
Oh, and did I mention they’re only 45 minute classes?! Yes! I traded my 2 hour workouts for 45 minutes and have seen better results in a shorter amount of time, than I did of years working out on my own!
You get a different workout every day of the week, and yes, you may repeat moves (like you would at the gym) but never in the same order, and never in the same workout consistently that your body never has time to adapt to what’s going on where you ‘plateau’ and your body is always in shock. And let me say from experience, burpees never get any easier. You hit different areas of the body every day, and let me go out on a limb here and say…Burn actually makes Cardio fun (if you hate cardio like me) VS being stuck on a machine for 40+ minutes. Machine cardio is so boring, to me personally, I hated it but did it because I had to. But doing cardio at Burn is so different. Ladders, burpees, running, jumping, full body weighted moves, suicide sprints, medicine ball slams, it’s always different, and never boring.
I’ve learned a lot of great things about my body since being there, I learned I’m so much stronger than I ever knew. I learned I can do a lot more than I ever thought I could. Max not taking “can’t” as an answer really helps you learn these things about yourself too. You are capable of a lot more than you can imagine. Trust me. It’s sometimes scary working out in a group setting, I occasionally would do it at the gym but I never loved it, I learned to love working out alone. Now that I’ve been away from that for so long, I couldn’t imagine ever working out without all of these amazing women pushing me, and looking up to me even! One of my favorite quotes at Burn hanging up on the wall is “Be strong, you never know who you’re inspiring.” Which I’ve learned to be very true. I’ve had people discover me on Instagram, and then try Burn and become members with me, and now I workout with them daily. I’ve had numerous women come up to me who have been there since day 1 telling me how amazing I am and how much I inspire them, and it makes my heart so full to be that role model to other women, even when I never realized I was.
Burn Boot Camp is an amazing place to try if you’re looking to get out of that plateau and change up your routine, they offer free camps every Saturday at 9AM, and offer free 14 day trials. They have locations all over the US so if you’re ever traveling you may always have the opportunity to workout. I could go on and on for DAYS about Burn, but you really should do yourself a favor and check it out!
Always remember, Comfort zones are great… but the world is a beautiful place outside of that comfort zone.
